Narrative
CIA agent Joe tries to balance her personal and professional life as the spearhead of the agency’s war on terrorism. Real military advisors helped produce a more authentic performance of weapons handling, house cleaning, positioning, team-based activities, etc. Mr. Sheridan knows how to introduce us to a testosterone-fueled, macho world without clichés and, seemingly, without hidden agendas. It is what it is.
Men are simple
No need to apologize. His characters are always grounded, and he is incredibly adept at casting. But to be great, you have to write good roles for women. The script has to be as good, if not better, than the script for the men. Women are smarter, more complex.
They are strong and compelling
Beth in Yellowstone (great character and acting), the barrel riders, the single woman working on the ranch (fantastic Jen Landon as Teeter) – all great female characters who fit into the world of the story in a natural, unforced way. Not just “partner…” or T&A. He upped his game with Faith Hill’s excellent character crush in “1883” and then Dame Mirren in the dud that was “1923”. Now we have Zoe Saldana doing some of the best work of her career. I absolutely buy her as a CIA chief in an open marriage (nice touch).
What a twist!
I buy De Oliveira as a broken woman with a burning rage who refuses to give up and thank you, thank you, thank you to the writers/directors/producers for NOT letting her beat up a comrade in arms with an extra hundred pounds of muscle. Truthfulness first and foremost! I think her character is much more interesting if she’s someone who needs to be knocked out or just pinned down on the ground before she gives up. Now let’s talk about Jill Wagner, or should I say her hair? From cheesy Hallmark to super tough special forces?
I buy it
Honorable Mention: Ms. Lanier as the nasty teen daughter. I look forward to seeing the arc given to this loose canon, as long as they stay away from the teen angst cliché. Good actor, could be interesting…
