After the pope dies, his ring (called the Fisherman’s Ring) is actually removed and destroyed
Narrative
When Cardinal Lawrence is tasked with leading one of the world’s most secretive and long-running events, the selection of a new pope, he finds himself at the center of a conspiracy that could shake the very foundations of the Catholic Church. Many of the actions of Cardinal Lawrence and the rest of the cardinals during the film’s conclave process are true to the Catholic faith and centuries of tradition. The Vatican actually makes an official announcement that the throne of the Holy See (the governing body of the Catholic Church) is vacant. The papal apartment is actually closed with a crimson ribbon and sealed with a papal wax seal.
Ayendi is said to be the first African pope
The College of Cardinals is actually sequestered in apartments (called the Domus Sanctae Marthae or St. Martha’s House in real life) to eat and sleep between votes. And finally, the windows and doors of the Sistine Chapel, where the elections take place and ballots are cast, are actually darkened, closed and locked to maintain the secrecy of the conclave. The Roman Catholic Church has had three African popes: Victor I (189-199 AD), Miltiades (also known as Melchiades, 311-314 AD) and Gelasius I (492-496 AD).
About 80 of them
Sister Agnes: Although we sisters are supposed to be invisible, God has nevertheless given us eyes and ears. Disclaimer – I am a Catholic and yes, as many say and note, the ending is a real 24 carat surprise but I am not giving anything away here but there are many stories to tell within the story that remain locked away in the labyrinth of the Vatican.
The production is gorgeous
Fiennes and Tucchi are of course masters at the top of their game and it shows. The thrills and games just keep coming. Living Latin in a conversation? Oh my!
But damn, that requires ordering the book
My point is that there are about 80 cardinals from all over our planet, only a handful are the focus and the rest are, shall we say, a matter of context. I would have appreciated a few varied side conversations. Nuns/sisters are of course part of it and I accept that with pleasure.
