Narrative

In the winter of 1862, during the Civil War, the U.S. Minervini built a set in Montana, then let the actors live there for two months. The dialogue and ideas spoken were invented by the actors while living in the wilderness, imagining themselves as Civil War soldiers.

All lack military experience, They share knowledge and pass on skills

The Damned: In the winter of 1862, a unit of Union volunteers is sent to defend the mountain territory, we are not told where it is, we do not even learn the names of the soldiers. After the regular army forces disperse, they are led by a John Brown-style patriarch with a spreading beard, and his teenage sons also enlist in the service. The soldiers are a mixed bunch, some middle-aged, even old, most in their thirties.

We witness mobile sentries, drawn to distant horsemen

Buffalo being shot and slaughtered, the bleak landscape, the hills, the mountain meadows, the drifting snow, the cold rations running out all contribute to the developing sense of existential despair. The battle is on, we see not the enemy but the casualties of the unit. War is hell, especially when you no longer know why you are there.

Some of it is unacceptable

A very Ken Loach-style film, with no dialogue on a daily basis and lots of ordinary people acting, amateurs and soldiers. This improvisation leads to philosophical, religious and political discussions around the campfires. But it does distract a little from this raw depiction of men at war.
