Narrative
Emilia Pérez follows four prominent women in Mexico, each pursuing their own happiness. The film is about Emilia Reta, a cartel leader who hires an underappreciated lawyer, and the two extremes of her own personality that she has to play as Emilia and Manitas. Audiard said that he was inspired by the idea for the musical from a chapter in a novel about a drug trafficker who yearns to change his identity. They deserved it

The first two are played by Zoe Saldaña and Karla Sofia Gascón, and the second two are played by Selena Gomez and Adriana Paz. This quartet shared the Best Actress award at Cannes 2024.
In their various forms
Saldaña in particular is a revelation. Of writer-director Jacques Audiard’s previous films, I’ve seen four (The Beat That My Heart Skipped, A Prophet, Rust and Bone, and The Sisters Brothers). None of them prepared me for this one, so hats off to him for not being a genre slob. There’s a lot of storytelling and a lot of singing in Emilia Pérez.
Otherwise, the songs drag the film down
When the singing is paired with Damien Jalot’s intense dancing, the effect is thrilling. They’re musical-theater-esque, not deep, and therefore not up to the dramatic demands placed on them. They’re at their best in rap-oriented numbers where rhythm is the most important element. Emilia Pérez’s moral is that we can never forget the past, change who we are, or what we want.
