During the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany, an American sports broadcast team must adapt to live coverage of Israeli athletes being held hostage by a terrorist group. Juliette Ménager worked in the casting department for both this film and München (2005). This was Regal’s Monday Mystery Movie for December 9th. I wasn’t expecting it, as I hadn’t heard much about it, but as soon as the film started, I was intrigued because I knew what story it was based on. It covers the events of September 5, 1972, the hostage situation carried out by Palestinian terrorists against the Israeli team during the Olympics in Munich, Germany. This film doesn’t delve into the politics of the situation, but instead focuses on the ABC sports news team who had to scramble to cover the events as they unfolded. It was well told and edited extremely well, with a combination of actual footage of the event mixed together with the actors’ performances. I was very impressed with how this was done, and I also enjoyed watching the story unfold through the eyes of the news crew. It was interesting to see how they had to think quickly to cover as much of what was happening as possible. It was also interesting to see the “behind the scenes” of news coverage, when the mainstream media actually acted ethically. Or tried to. This isn’t an action-packed movie, but I was engaged the entire time and wasn’t bored at all. It’s also a pretty short movie, clocking in at about 90 minutes (although it felt longer because of everything that was going on). Recommended. Video review coming soon.
