In Mexico City in the 1950s, an American immigrant in his forties leads a solitary life among a small American community. I’ve never seen The Naked Dinner (1991), but I often thought about it during the 2024 London Film Festival screening of Strange: I probably should have, given that William S. Burroughs provided the source material for both. films. In Mexico in the 1950s, William Lee, an American writer in his early forties? Fifty? He spends his days getting drunk, using drugs and having casual sex with other men. One day, a young and muscular Eugene enters the bar, and Lee falls in love with him. But what does Eugene want? And it’s worth thinking about the telepathic drug… I’m not sure what stylistically director Luca Guadagnino is trying to achieve with this film. The sets are done almost exclusively in solid colors such as dull reds and olive greens, and have that vaguely unrealistic, clean, multicolored look that made me think the intention was to pay homage to the films of the era in which the action of the film takes place. But if that’s the case, why is the soundtrack clearly not from rock and techno of the 50s? Daniel Craig (I think or is he starting to look like Sid James?) in the main role is hindered by the fact that he has to constantly carry gibberish with an accent that is clearly not his. Drew Starkey is able to play with more subtlety as the manipulative Eugene, and he definitely looks good. Leslie Manville is unrecognizably like a doctor living in the jungles of South America – kudos to the make-up team! It seems to me that the artistic style is more important in this film than the narrative essence. It was nice to watch it once, but I won’t watch it again.
