Narrative

It follows Catherine Ravenscroft, a TV documentary journalist whose work has been built on exposing the transgressions of long-respected institutions. Such a lens would not be able to focus on close-up subjects like selfies with Sasha or in the bedroom with Catherine. Damn!

At its core, this is a story of revenge

I was unaware of the experience I was having when I started screening this AppleTV+ limited series starring Cate Blanchett and Kevin Kline. “Exemption” is based on the novel of the same name by Renée Knight, and was written for and directed by Alfonso Cuarón. Blanchett plays Catherine, a journalist whose secrets from her past resurface in alarming ways, forcing her to confront that past and turn her entire life upside down.

Blanchett, as always, is fantastic here and Kline also gives a solid performance

This was a masterfully told story, taking us on a fascinating journey of discovery as the audience is shown (sometimes in vivid detail) the “events” of Catherine’s past. It was surprising to see Sacha Baron Cohen in a more serious role, but he did him justice. Despite a couple/few small issues, I would highly recommend this series if you like character dramas with some added tension/intrigue.

Note: There are some pretty graphic depictions of sex/intimacy shown in various episodes. This is not action packed, and it took about half an episode (about 30 minutes) before I was finally “caught”; on to the story. But boy, am I glad I stuck around.
