The exploits of various guests and employees of a luxury resort over the course of a week… HBO has renewed the series for a second season, despite the show being originally intended as a limited one-season miniseries. The show is rumored to be an anthology-style series with new characters each season. HBO has done this before (to wide acclaim) with True Detective (2014). Featured on Jeremy Vine: Episode #4.175 (2021). While some of the first season was cringe-worthy, this second season is about as masterful as anyone could hope for. It starts off a little slow, the first episode, but it soon finds its feet and impresses again and again, captivating me as if I wasn’t experienced enough. It feels like a review of every thought I’ve ever had about a vacation resort, many of which I’ve long since forgotten. On that score alone, it’s a pleasure, but don’t worry, it goes far beyond flirting with opera-like heights of drama and beauty, something quite fitting considering its Sicilian setting. Given the excellence of the acting and the seeming ease of the story, I’d say Mike White, this series’ creator, is some kind of unsung genius. The man seems to know no bounds, coupled with one of the sharpest eyes for detail I’ve ever seen.
