Narrative<\/h2>\n

Emilia P\u00e9rez follows four prominent women in Mexico, each pursuing their own happiness. The film is about Emilia Reta, a cartel leader who hires an underappreciated lawyer, and the two extremes of her own personality that she has to play as Emilia and Manitas. Audiard said that he was inspired by the idea for the musical from a chapter in a novel about a drug trafficker who yearns to change his identity. They deserved it<\/h4>\n

In their various forms<\/h4>\n

Salda\u00f1a in particular is a revelation. Of writer-director Jacques Audiard\u2019s previous films, I\u2019ve seen four (The Beat That My Heart Skipped, A Prophet, Rust and Bone, and The Sisters Brothers). None of them prepared me for this one, so hats off to him for not being a genre slob. There\u2019s a lot of storytelling and a lot of singing in Emilia P\u00e9rez. <\/p>\n

Otherwise, the songs drag the film down<\/h4>\n

When the singing is paired with Damien Jalot\u2019s intense dancing, the effect is thrilling. They\u2019re musical-theater-esque, not deep, and therefore not up to the dramatic demands placed on them. They\u2019re at their best in rap-oriented numbers where rhythm is the most important element. Emilia P\u00e9rez\u2019s moral is that we can never forget the past, change who we are, or what we want. <\/p>\n

It’s a strangely dark scene to present in a musical setting<\/h4>\n<\/p>\n
